Orange County Organizer on Retiring and What to do With Your Free Time

services_relocationAs I have been working with families that are downsizing and retiring we talk a lot about what one will do with all your time.

I thought it would be interesting to discuss some of their thoughts with you so you can think about it too.  I can always remember one of my doctors who informed me that he was going to retire in 3 years.  I said , “why are you telling me now?”  He said, “Because I have to figure out what I am going to do with all my free time.  I  don’t want to sit at home and work on the computer or watch TV.”

A lot of people have shared that they are going to travel, volunteer, garden, read, sew, and do things around the house.

They also were concerned about “knowing the cost of retiring” and “having no debt”.

Scaling back has some emotional cost in it because you are changing your lifestyle and getting rid of a lot of “stuff”.  Remember that the “stuff” will be a treasure to others to help them fulfill their futures.

University of Michigan Health and Retirement Study finds that 40% of Americans between 50-64 plan to move in 5 years and establish their retirement homes.

60% of Americans over 60 have more things then they will need.

David Ekerdt, Director of Gerontology Center at University of Kansas says that three quarters of retirees say that the sheer volume of their possessions has made them “somewhat” or “very reluctant” to move.

Before dismantling your home, take pictures of everything.  When I downsized my Mother’s home we took pictures of each room and they are in my scrapbook.  It was the home I grew up in – so I still have the memories and a few paintings that used to hang on the walls.  And of course you can always contact your Orange County Professional Organizer to help you with this process!

If you start sorting your belongings over an extended period of time you will not be so overwhelmed and you won’t have a tendency to get rid of stuff that you are just not sure of.  Consider your new life style, your smaller space, and take what fits your new life style.  You want to enjoy your new freedom of retirement and not get bogged down with living in a crowded space because you kept too much.
