5 Orange County Organization Tips for the Holidays

Well my friends, it is happening… the holiday season is upon us once again. That’s an interesting figure of speech isn’t it; “the holiday season is UPON US“. Why must we feel that the holidays are a type of weight that sits upon us instead of a time with family, friends, and other loved ones to enjoy?

Do you get excited about the holidays only to realize as they get closer that it’s more like they are “closing in” on you and stress is as abundant as turkey and twinkling lights?

You are not alone. And as an Orange County professional organizer, I am here to help.

The holidays are most certainly a time when we often leave the dishes for later and decide that we can put away our decor and trimmings another time in favor of more time with our family. We get less sleep, spend more money, and have dark corners of our homes where doors stay closed for fear that an avalanche of shoved items will fall on us!

So how do we stay organized during this time so our fun holiday spirit does not turn to chaos and stress?

  • Get plenty of sleep. Notice I didn’t say “enough” or a certain number of hours. You know your body the best. You won’t accomplish anything else on this list, let alone enjoy your holidays if you don’t get PLENTY of sleep for you to feel rested.
  • If you aren’t using it right now put it away right now! Whether you have envelopes to seal, ribbons to curl, or are undertaking a crafty Christmas gift, you need to put away the things you aren’t using at the moment. The longer items sit out, the less likely they will be put away.
  • Visit your closet before you visit the stores! As an Orange County organizer I really have seen it all, and this includes clutter from over-purchasing lots of “stuff”. Whether it’s clothes, shoes, tools, etc. you may already have what you’re credit card is looking for at the mall. If you are no longer using the items you uncover in your closet, purge – donate – re-gift (the nice stuff). Once you have a handle on your existing home inventory, then you are ready to shop.
  • Decoration Swap. Feel like last year’s decorations just don’t work for you anymore? Chances are they would be gorgeous for someone else. And chances are you have a friend who feels the same way about their decorations. Why not propose a swap? You will each get something NEW without having to find space for an additional set of decorations.
  • Finally – and you knew this was coming – make lists. Don’t make them just for the heck of it. Really get all the tasks out onto paper or your tablet / smartphone and work through each item one at a time. Whether you’re shopping for recipe ingredients or the perfect holiday gift, a list will save you time AND will save you money avoiding unnecessary impulse buys.
