Organizing Your Home One Room at a Time

Everyone dreams of a clutter-free and organized home. When we are greeted with a mess as soon as we open our front door, our stress level goes way up.  On the other hand, organizing the clutter in a whole house is so overwhelming that many people don’t want to take the first step to starting.

Download our Home Organization Checklist!Like other huge projects, organizing your home takes a lot of time and energy. To make sure you tackle home organization successfully, here are some helpful tips from a professional Orange County organizer:

  • Make a list.
Make a list of all rooms that need to be organized along with correlating tasks for each room.
  • Get everyone involved.
If you aren’t a bachelor (or bachelorette) make sure to consider your family when creating your organizing plan.  If you have children, you may want to think about ways they can help you organize and continue to clean up year round.  Your home won’t stay clean and organized if everyone isn’t on board!
  • Begin with the most used room.
The first room you organize should be the one that you use the most. It can be the living room, kitchen, home office or any other room in the house that gathers the most clutter.
  • Throw it out!
The general rule of thumb:  If you haven’t used an item in more than a year, get rid of it.  Donating unwanted items to local charities is a great way to stay green and help your community.
  • Create centers for single activities.
Preschool teachers have nailed the art of defining areas of the room for specific activities.  If you are into arts & crafts, make sure you have a dedicated area of your home to work.
  • Find a place for every item.
It’s easy to throw the mail on the counter or your keys on the coffee table, but clutter tends to multiply quickly.
  • Make the most of your time.
Don’t wait for a long weekend or a big chunk of free time. If you only have half an hour free each day, use that time to clean out a cabinet or sweep the floor.
  • Don’t get distracted.
Focus on one room and don’t stop until you have finished cleaning and organizing that room.

Keep Motivated when Organizing Your Home

Organizing and cleaning one room at a time gives you a sense of accomplishment and motivates you to start on the next room. It is also less daunting thinking of one room to clean rather than the whole house. Remember to reward yourself after you finish cleaning one room.

If your clutter is just too much or you just don’t have the time, don’t be too hard on yourself. Instead, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Professional home organizers have the tools and the skills that can help you lead an organized and stress-free life! They may be just what you need to get rid of the chaos and usher in calmness into your home.
