Orange County Home Organizing Tips: Conquering the Mountain of Paperwork

Getting your paperwork in order is essential in keeping your “clutter” tamed.  When developing an Orange County organizing system, this piece of the puzzle is a pivotal hinge in the equation.   When you look at a pile or bag of papers, you are looking at clutter that is unsorted and unrelated.

Unorganized paperwork can cause many emotional issues:

  • Panic – Did I pay that bill on time?
  • Embarrassment if you miss an important meeting or date that was scribbled on a small note pad.
  • Frustrated when the mess delays you from making an important decision.
  • Anxiety when the clutter takes on a life of its own and a sick feeling sinks in.

This pile of papers – clutter – can be prevented with three (3) simple steps:

  1.  A “to do” folder works for some people, but be cautious as many people start multiple “to do” folders and that creates confusion.  This folder should include bills to pay, letters to answer, items to send to others, etc.
  2. Set 30 minutes aside everyday  and put all your “to do” items on the keyboard of your computer.  This will prompt you to handle them before getting too  involved in emails/internet and allows you to stay on top of it daily. If you miss a day, don’t panic.
  3. File once a week.  You can decide at this point if you really need to keep the item and under what heading to file it.  Keep your file headings SIMPLE and in alphabetical order.  Each person has words that they recognize as headers, use the right ones for you. Filing of completed items is essential only if you need to reference it in the future.
  • Letters or correspondence, such as medical insurance communication, save a copy until the issue is resolved.
  • Paid bills, unless you use it as a tax write-off, can be tossed or shredded.
  • Credit Card statements are the only bill that is important to keep. If you need to return an item, the date you purchased it will be on your bill. Keeping your statements for one year allows you to reference quickly in case there is a problem. Credit card companies will run you additional copies but you have to wait for them and that can increase anxiety.
