Destroying Diskettes & Digital Data

When you’re cleaning up your home office, you might have old floppy discs sitting around, or CDs.

How do you safely get rid of these old programs and storage mediums, when the world has moved into a more digital age?

Many questions have come up the last few months on how to dispose of your 3” floppy diskettes. Most of the disks do have personal information on them. Example are the old Turbo Tax yearly disks. Many people do not have machines to read these anymore and it is not cost effective to find someone that could read them – the information is old and if you have not had to reference it you probably don’t need to now.

So there are some suggestions of how to destroy the diskettes:

  1. You can burn them. The United States Government has been destroying classified material for any years using this method. Make sure you are safe when you do fire them – best would be in a solid metal trash bin. Today this method is a little too difficult. So lets go to the second method.
  2. Find a powerful magnet – suggestions of a neodymium magnet have been mentioned and rub the magnet all over both sides of your diskette. This will change all the 1’s and 0’s making the data unreadable. This can also be used to wipe CDs, old hard drives, or flash memory (‘Thumb drives’.)
  3. The final suggestion is one that I tried on about 10 diskettes of our family. You pull the disk apart (unclipping the metal on the top), rip out the metal center piece. Detach the magnetic tape disk and put into a cross-cut shredder. It was simple, no stress, and then I could throw away the plastic outsides.

When cleaning your office this spring remember this tip. It’s therapeutic in a way to see all these old things go out the door, with you likely having never needed them! Old tax info, old programs, work records or random files. If you need help with your office I would be glad to help, just contact me here for a free consultation!
