Book Review: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo

“The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing.”  by Marie Kondo is on the New York Times best seller list and has sold over two million copies! It is an easy read and you can tackle sections at a time without having to attack the whole book at once. It is based, in part, on the following “zen” principle of feeling good about items/objects that you are going to keep.

If you hold an item and you get JOY out of it- then keep it!
If it gives you no joy, then donate it!
When you are dealing with smaller areas, such as the homes in Japan and in Europe, this is a very critical criteria. It is more difficult to keep a large area organized, because there’s just so much to keep clean and tidy.

51H8x07Fd7L._SX351_BO1,204,203,200_Ms. Kondo teaches the decluttering of a space by adopting the KonMari Method. You start by discarding everything you don’t want at one time. “Then you organize your space, thoroughly, completely, in one go.” This method is not always possible, I believe, because our homes are larger and we have, over the years, collected so much more stuff. It takes quite a bit of time to go through even a moderately sized building. Perhaps a person could go through their home one room at a time while following this method, treating each different space as its own ‘space within a space’, but not all at once.

I agree with her that once you organize your home and put it in order, you can approach all the different aspects of life in an orderly fashion and the past also stays in order.

The ability to stay organized is not only a mindset. it is a habit that you need to develop in order to stay organized. You need to work on it! We all have the need to practice it during our lives. Most people never master the art of being orderly, as it takes discipline and a lot of hard work. “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” is a good book, with useful ideas presented. However, some of them, particularly in regards to organization of a home or an office in 80% of individuals areas, is just a little too unrealistic for many people.

Read it and see what you think! Whether you agree or not with Marie Kondo’s ideas within it, it’s worth knowing.
